Lions kicker Harvard Rugland (AKA ‘Kickalicious’) earned an NFL tryout with the Lions because of this video. He took advantage of this opportunity in his preseason debut last weekend when he went 2-2, connecting on field goals from 49 and 50 yards.
But via Peter King’s MMQB column, the most impressive part about Rugland might be the words coming out of his mouth rather than the footballs coming off of his foot.
In his discussion with King, Rugland dropped some of the company lines we are used to hearing from more experienced NFL veterans, like a Peyton Manning or a Tom Brady.
“I just have to focus on getting better, doing something every day to make myself better,” says Rugland. “All I can do is focus on controlling what I can control.”
Keep in mind, Rugland has lived in Norway all of his life, and only started kicking American footballs last year. The fact that he has already picked up on this Belichick-ian way of talking is amusing, to say the least.
Rugland will surely be capable of earning a job with an NFL team if he can keep making kicks. And being aware of the politics in American sports and media will surely help his cause, too.
